Summary

Cherished by millions of readers, this #1 New York Times best-selling novel is a powerful tale of perseverance and hope。 Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park interweaves the stories of two Sudanese children who overcome mortal dangers to improve their lives and the lives of others。

A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about two eleven-year-olds in Sudan, a girl in 2008 and a boy in 1985。 The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day。 The boy, Salva, becomes one of the “lost boys” of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay。 Enduring every hardship from loneliness to attack by armed rebels to contact with killer lions and crocodiles, Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way。 Includes an afterword by author Linda Sue Park and the real-life Salva Dut, on whom the novel is based, and who went on to found Water for South Sudan。

Very quick read。 Great story that made you think, but didn't have to get into the goriness of the violence, which I appreciated。 Very quick read。 Great story that made you think, but didn't have to get into the goriness of the violence, which I appreciated。 。。。more

This book showcases two stories in two separate sections of two different times。 One story where the lives and survival of the Sudanese were shown during the longest civil war (1983-2005) of Sudan, was mainly highlighted by the real-life story of one of the lost boys of southern Sudan, Salva Dut! Being an eleven years old refugee, life was hard and harsh at a time for Salva。 Where death seems the only fortune, survival feels like a bonus。 And just like that, the story keeps moving forward and every day hundreds of thousands of people like Salva kept walking away from war, away from family and home, far away from southern Sudan, and heads to Ethiopia, then to Kenya; in search of safety, food, and a roof! If something kept them going despite their difficulties throughout the journey, it must be hope。 Hope to rejoin with family one day, hope for the betterment, hope to stay alive! As I kept reading, refugee Salva wore the crown of adolescence saying goodbye to his juvenile self; life for him, is still the same。 You are hungry, walk; you are thirsty, walk; you are afraid, walk; your feet bleed, walk; people dying in front of your eyes, walk。 Walk, walk, and walk till you reach the refugee camp! That tiring walk becomes shorten as I move to the next chapter, but Salva's life as a refugee for such a longest period has been as hard as easy it was to flip a page in a novel! All those scary nights, starving days, and endless walks have many lessons for readers。 Sometimes, I even tried to feel the pain of Rohingyas, through Salva's sleeve。 Life is hard for any refugee, maybe we are just too indifferent to understand or acknowledge that! In another part of the story, Linda scoops up a fictional story of Nya and eventually blends it perfectly with the true courageous story of Sudan's lost boy, Salva。 This story reminds me again that life is always hard。 And real joy of success comes through hardship。 Thank you Salva Dut for reminding me, "Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope。" 。。。more

Linda Sue Park does it again。 We all loved。 Beautifully intertwined amazingly difficult stories。 Even through the difficult moments--that's why we read aloud--to process together。 This is near and dear to our hearts as we soon meet a South Sudanese student。 Linda Sue Park does it again。 We all loved。 Beautifully intertwined amazingly difficult stories。 Even through the difficult moments--that's why we read aloud--to process together。 This is near and dear to our hearts as we soon meet a South Sudanese student。 。。。more

Such an incredible story—I couldn’t put it down!

Told in alternating chapters, Nya needs to walk two hours to get contaminated water from an almost dry pond, and Salva walks for years to escape the war in Sudan。 He is what has come to be known as a Lost Boy。 Their stories are gripping but the writing in this short edition is not。 The stories needed to be longer than these short 120 pages in order to do them justice。

Quick but good read。

Sad to know how many in the world suffer from civil war, hunger, corruption in government, and more。 This will definitely make you have a tender heart and understanding for refugees。

Inspiring true story! I want to try harder to help others as Salva has。

A long walk to water is a spectacular book of perspective。 There has never been a book about perspective more in the other stories。 A long walk to water is about a girl who walks 8 hours a day to get water for her family。 Salve walks away from his village that is now full of battles and war and walks all over Africa to find his family。

My book arrived in the mail at 3pm yesterday, I was done reading it at 6:30 pm。 Oh my gosh, I absolutely love this book。 I couldn't put it down。 The final line in the story sent a pang through my chest! I was so shocked, that I reflected on it all evening。 Highly recommending to my students this school year。 My book arrived in the mail at 3pm yesterday, I was done reading it at 6:30 pm。 Oh my gosh, I absolutely love this book。 I couldn't put it down。 The final line in the story sent a pang through my chest! This is such an interesting story。 I think it would be more profound for someone who hasn’t lived in Africa, but I still really liked it。

An appropriate book to listen to in the car with the kiddos。 Had a great lesson of perseverance, and working through your fears。 We have a kiddo who should have been listening, as she could use those lessons。 She chose not to。A great story that really comes full circle, and pulls everything together。 Fighting through tough times, and making it。 But not just that, going back and helping when and where you can。

A Wonderful Story about one of the amazing Lost Boys of Sudan。 It's not "that" well written but the story is great。。。hence, 4 stars instead of 5。 A Wonderful Story about one of the amazing Lost Boys of Sudan。 It's not "that" well written but the story is great。。。hence, 4 stars instead of 5。 。。。more
